| yeah. i know. 2 months later i decided to update this. oh well. things have been busy. counting down the days till camp. you know, normal springtime routine...getting excited about camp actually. i've been having some crazy camp dreams (taneka will appreciate them most probably) involving people from last summer and people i haven't even met from this coming summer. i've checked out their myspaces though....and i have to admit, i'm a little frightened. who wouldn't be??? anyway. on to topic # 2....
WHY THE H IS EVERYONE GETTING ENGAGED????? the next person that calls and tells me they are engaged, i'm warning you, i will probably hang up the phone. its absurd. its an epidemic, a plague. whats the deal?? i mean, in the past 6 months, no lie, 6 of my friends have gotten engaged. 2 of which have ALREADY been married. whats that all about??? craziness i tell you. just plain craziness.
| So i realize this has been neglected but for good reason. Things have been crazy in the southeastern part of VA. Lets talk about the Oscar nominations that I'm excited about:
First of all, Crash has a total of 6 nominations. This is HUGE! Crash is an independent film, more or less, and was extremely low budget. Low budget recognition in Hollywood, especially Academy recognition is a big big deal. Most of the films this year nominated lean towards the cheaper end of production costs. Huge pictures like Cinderella Man and King Kong were almost if not completely snubbed. Brokeback Mountain has 8 nominations. Totally saw that coming, right? Even Michelle Williams merited a nod. Long way from the creek now huh jen? Im not quite sure where i stand on who will win or not yet. I still have some more films to see. Alot actually. I fell down on the job this past year. I'll get back to you about the rest.
| 35 days and counting until the 78th Annual Academy Awards. Some people get excited about college football season or basketbal season....but as for me, its Oscar season that gets me excited. Tomorrow morning at 7:30 AM I will be sitting in front of my TV watching as the nominees are announced for the first time. From there, I can narrow down which films I've seen and which ones I need to see. Last year, I saw EVERY film that was nominated. . . even the short ones and foreign ones. And after all of the madness of screening these films, its time to hold my annual Oscar Celebration! I have an Oscar party every year, and each year there is a different theme. Last year, everything was black and white (except the red carpet rolled out) and you had to come dressed as an Oscar winner from the 30's or 40's. I was Shirley Temple (who was just honored with her life achievement awards last night during the SAG awards..anyway) . I still have a couple of days to decide what the theme will be for this year. And the menu. And the venue. I might have to have it somewhere different depending on the number of guests...
Films and performances I hope will be nominated :
in all actuality, I wasn't very impressed with the releases of 2005. The only ones I really want to be nominated are Cinderella Man (which probably won't b/c it was such a big budget picture that was released WAY too early in the year), Crash (hopefully will get some sort of nomination, it won Best Ensemble Cast last night at the SAG awards), the Producers (amazing adaptation of a film turned into a broadway hit turned back into a film. the performances were impecable and Mel Brooks still ranks as one of the funniest men in Hollywood in my book), and ofcourse, the film and cast of Walk the Line (this took best picture, best Actress, and best Actor at the Golden Globes. The performances were dead on. Hopefully it will repeat its success at the Oscars).
Films and performances that will probably be nominated b/c of all the hype:
Brokeback Mountain. Ok. I did see this film. It was good, but I don't think it lived up to all of the hype. The acting was brilliant, and I'm not just saying that b/c 2 straight guys play lovers convincingly. Heath Ledgers accent was flawless, Michelle Williams gave an extraordinary performance as his wife who chooses to look the other way. She definitely captured that character. Ang Lee's direction was great as usual (we'll pretend he didn't make The Hulk). Jake Gyllenhaal also did well. I don't think his performance will merit a nomination though. Although, this is the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences we are talking about comprised of key Hollywood players who will most likely praise its boldness rather than its effectiveness. Either way, this film will get a few nods.
tell me what you think. tell me what you hope will be nominated and why. i'll fill you in on the nominations after tomorrow. until then....
| promises. why do we make them? i mean, we aren't perfect. how could we possibly make a promise and expect nothing in the world to prevent us from keeping it? so why do we make them? why do we blatantly lie about things in hopes that we might not be wrong? whats the point? i mean, millions of people each year walk down the isle and solemnly vow to have and to hold from this day forth as long as they all shall live.....and only maybe hundreds...if that....keep that promise. that vow is supposed to be made in front of God even, but does that mean anything now? No. we promise our friends that we will always keep in touch, we promise each other that nothing will ever come between our friendships, we promise each other that we will always be there for each other. how do we know that? we can't stake claim on ALWAYS or NEVER or NOTHING or EVER. you can't bank on those words. you don't know whats going to happen. how can you trust those words? how can you trust that people won't let you down? you do it by faith. you put your faith in people. but what ultimately happens? especially if you're me? you get let down. yep. sarah greer is right. pessimism is the answer. so...moral of the story? putting yourself out there...being vulnerable...giving someone else a sense of power over you, the power of information....trusting another person with something that is so important to you that you think so hard on it until you feel like you can't possibly think anymore, until your ribs are bruised from thinking about it....is never guaranteed. never. | | |
